The Greater Hartford Youth Rugby Football Club currently offers developmental, flag rugby for local youth athletes
in a co-ed, team-first atmosphere that welcomes elementary and middle school aged players of any skill level.
Our mission is simple: teach, develop and foster the sport of rugby for all players through
sportsmanship, teamwork, inclusion, and mutual respect. Our little ruggers can carry these core values with them when playing other sports and into classrooms for years to come. The program's overall goal is to build a strong rugby foundation in youth players starting at the flag-
rugby level, and developing those players with advanced skills and strategy training for their eventual transition to tackle rugby as they mature.
Our Home pitch is located in beautiful Wethersfield CT in Mill Woods park.
WYRFC's tenth season marked two milestones in the program's evolution. It not only confirmed the
sustainability for youth rugby in the area, it also sparked a significant transition for the program. Local clubs
shifted their tackle programs to the Spring season, altering the youth rugby agenda for both tackle and
flag players. WYRFC elected to discontinue the tackle program for the Spring of 2019 - partially due to
an unwillingness to force players and families to choose between rugby and some of the more traditional
Spring sports. However, three remaining parents/coaches spearheaded an effort to maintain the Summer, Co-ed
youth flag program for kids 13 and Under.
Bolstered by growing numbers within the two most accessible youth programs - Shoreline Rugby
(formerly Clinton) and Midstate Rugby (formerly Cheshire), WYRFC remained open for business in the Summer
of 2019 with impressive success.
There were 19 registered players from Wethersfield and surrounding
communities, and the team participated in five tournament-style events with Shoreline and
Midstate throughout June and July. WYRFC hosted two of the tournament days, involving over 50 kids
simultaneously playing on three quality pitches prepared by the
Wethersfield Park and Recreation department at Mill Woods Park. In November, WYRFC hosted an annual Turkey Bowl with Shoreline and Midstate Rugby for a fun mash-up of games with players from all three clubs intermingled followed by a collective social at the local Buffalo Wild Wings. It was a fantastic way to end a
successful 2019 campaign for all three programs and to keep the rugby spirit alive in the off-season! As
such, 2019 proved that WYRFC continued to serve as a model for youth rugby in Central Connecticut. The
2019 season also demonstrated that the program was drawing players well-beyond a single zip code,
therefore a Re-Branding effort commenced to fully represent the participating communities. By
the close of 2019, WYRFC evolved into the Greater Hartford Youth Rugby Football Club (GHYRFC)
while retaining the Red Onions identity. A fresh logo was created - depicting an enhanced Red
Onions image paired with a nod to the Colt Building's iconic dome an effort to honor our strong
Wethersfield roots while also capturing the present and future trajectory. GHYRFC's history,
team identity, and goals remain the same as they were at their inception in 2010 - and the future is bright
for the development of youth rugby players in the Greater Hartford area!
